The future for the UK coal industry will depend upon its ability to operate profitably (that is, without subsidy) at prices which are competitive with competing fuels, including internationally-traded coal. In assessing the potential market, regard has to be taken of the wide range of uncertainty which applies to the external factors which will have a crucial influence on demand and price.
